Do You Need a Visum to Visit India?

India takes great care to provide a safe place for foreigners to visit, and the country requires that any visitor that doesn't reside in Nepal or Bhutan have a visa before visiting the country. India also has strict regulations on how long you can stay in India before you must leave, and they even have a timeframe in place that dictates how much time must go by before you can return to the country. If you're just visiting India for a couple of days, you can apply for a transit visa that allows you temporary access to the country for no more than 72 hours. Anyone who wants an extended stay in India will need to apply for a tourist visa.

India Visa Requests

In order to travel to and leave India you must request the proper visum from the Indian Embassy or Consulate. The requirements for a visa change frequently and the Indian government doesn't necessarily keep all travelers up to date on changes. It's advised by travel professionals to speak or write to the Indian Government's Ministry of Home Affairs to find out exactly what you need to get a visum. The Indian Embassy contracts out with some countries to allow you to apply and receive a visa directly from the contracted office. Otherwise, all applications go directly through the Indian Embassy and Consulates. Very few countries are granted the right for people to receive a visa upon arrival in India, but places like Singapore, New Zealand, and Japan have an agreement with India that allows their citizens to receive a tourist visa once they reach India.

The typical visa allows tourists to stay in India for up to 6 months, although missionaries or others who travel to India for work or research reasons may be granted extended stays if approved by the Embassy. While extensions are available, they are rarely granted except for extreme circumstances. If you plan to stay longer than 6 months, you must also register your visit within two weeks after arriving in India.

India also enacts a 2 month time span between visits. Once you leave India, even if you didn't stay the full 180 days, you may not return to the country for two months. If you fail to leave the country after 180 days, the Indian government may fine or even imprison you for a violation.
